Psychometric Tests

            Verbal Reasoning

                  Inductive Reasoning

Psychometric tests are now a common part of the assessment process for police promotions at all ranks.

 Psychometric tests are designed to assess your reasoning abilities or how you respond to different situations

Psychometric tests aren't about luck; prior preparation will improve your scores and make it easier to focus on what is being sought in the testing process.  To succeed in them you'll need to do some preparation in advance but this site provides access for you to practice them.

Verbal reasoning tests assess your understanding and comprehension skills.  You will be presented with a passage of text and will need to answer a True, False or Cannot Say response to each statement.

You will be presented with a (long and complicated!) passage to read and a statement about that passage.  You must select one of the following answers;

TRUE:  The statement must be true based on the information in the passage

FALSE: The statement must be false based on the information in the passage

CANNOT SAY:  It is not possible to say whether the statement is true or false without more information

This will be a timed test

 Inductive reasoning is a measurable aptitude for how well a person can identify a pattern within a large amount of data. It involves applying the rules of logic when inferring general principles from a constellation of particulars. Measurement is generally done by showing 4 or 5 pictures and asking the test taker to identify which of 4 or 5 further pictures/patterns would logically follow on;

Situational Judgement Tests (SJT's) are a type of psychological test which assess how you approach realistic, hypothetical situations encountered in the workplace. Whilst there is some variation in how they are delivered, they typically present you with a written description of a scenario and ask you to select the most appropriate response and least appropriate response from a multiple choice list.

Many police forces use a company called SHL which ask the individual to rank the responses in the order they feel is most effective.

You will not be tested on police related scenarios but general public and private sector scenarios.

They are designed to test your potential across a number of competencies. Competencies can be defined as: "An underlying characteristic of a person which enables them to deliver superior performance in a given job, role or situation." The police competencies can be found in the Policing Professional Framework
